Jeff Davenport, a man whose business card reads “Director of University Ministries,” but whose real position is more that of chief spiritual guru for the 90263 zip code recently announced his departure from the UM community. While I’ll certainly miss his Tuesday night teachings, one spiffy silver lining in this transition is that he’s headed to my beloved home state, and God knows Boulder needs him. His final message was a smorgasbord of “sixteen things I want you to remember”–part tract, part doctrinal, and part how-to–and, in my opinion, worth sharing:
1. Know Him. You were built to know God.
2. Receive from God. You are not your own shepherd. You are your own god when you are your primary provider. God is your God when He is your primary provider.
3. You will never love God if you don’t know He loves you.
4. You and your community are the body of Christ. To see the work of God, open your eyes and look around.
5. Salvation does not mean you are a blank slate. You are covered by Christ.
6. You are reliant on the counsel of watchmen. Watchmen guard directions you can’t see.
7. Give others authority in your life.
8. You are unique. Flourish in it.
9. If your life is too fast, you will act out of duty, not out of passion.
10. Read Psalm 23 daily.
11. Seek refuge. Matthew 11:28-30.
12. God ordained a Sabbath. Use it.
13. You can hear from God. God does not live in a pulpit.
14. The enemy lies.
15. God never lies.
16. Always remember to love all that God has for you.
Johnnie….I heard a nastly little rumor that you are going to be at Basic during my wedding…I really hope that this is not true…
